A7N8X Deluxe and "dual channel" question???
So I get myself a 3200+ and then buy two separate sticks (same company,
style, type, etc.) of PC3200 RAM at 512MB each. I put them in slots 1 & 3 so I can run in "dual channel." As things happen this does not work...the OS will not come up after the BIOS boot screens and memory test (memory tests fine). Anyway, I check the manufactures web site and it says that it is important to have two of the exact same RAM sticks or you will have trouble. Okay, so I return the sticks and get a "dual channel kit." This works fine and I have 1 GB of RAM - 512 in slots 1 & 3. Everythig is working now. But... Here's the question: If I have to have "matching" sticks of RAM for dual channel to work...what if I want to stick a third stick in slot 2? This will obviously not be part of a "kit" and most likely not match the other two sticks. How does this work???? |

you dont need matching sticks....i have 2 different pc3200 ram chips and
they work in dual channel 2x512, on same board "Irrat8ed" wrote in message ... So I get myself a 3200+ and then buy two separate sticks (same company, style, type, etc.) of PC3200 RAM at 512MB each. I have done so but I also have OCZ Ram and not any generic..some say to add
a 3rd you should then add a 1 gig stick to balance out your 2 512s..I had 2 sticks 256 PC3200 and all I added was another 256..dual channel does not add that much performance so I would not worry about it |

I was going to get an Asus A7N8AX board and use Dual Data Channel but the shop didn't have any left in stock... The guy there said that board didn't support DDC anyway... Strange..!!! I could have sworn I saw it "did"... And besides,, my younger brother has one and he says it works on his.... Anyway, I was looking for an excuse to move away from Asus stuff as they are beconing very average nowadays, so I bought a Gigabyte board and have DDC now up and running... |

Personaly, I beleive the most common way to fix this issue on the A7N8X is to raise the Voltage on the RAM. I find 2.7V makes my two sticks of Corsair XMS-3500 512M stable. They have never worked at 2.6V on this Version 2 board, or with my prior Version 1.02 A7N8X-Deluxe Motherboard. You don't need a Duel Channel Kit, it's just Marketings way of saying they work in Duel Channel and I would presume they also Guarantee them to work with a Stock Voltage setting. I wouldn't be surprised if they tell you to raise the RAM Voltage to 2.7V in one of those kits. From memory the two coloured RAM slots 2 & 3 worked here and slots 1 and 3 didn't. Hope that helps. Lots to be said for single channel: reliable, simple, cheap. The dual channel boost doesn't seem to be worth buying two sticks of ram for if you're on a budget. |
