MSI 5900 Ultra (256mb) v Creative v Gainward?
After 3 weeks of system lock-ups, re-boots etc I've returned the crap
9800 pro I bought at Xmas for a full refund. Have been using Nvidia for years now, with no problems, thought I'd give ATI a chance. Bad mistake, now corrected! Anyway, sorry about the OT rant, just had to vent it! So, I'm looking at an MSI 5900 Ultra to replace it- Dabs are selling it at £335. Anybody care to comment on build quality/reliability? I couls purchase a Gainward or a Creative 5900 ultra for about the same price, but from what I can make out the MSI has a quieter cooling solution. TIA John |

TIA John Very quiet cooling system on the MSI cards. Does the one you are looking at have the big, copper HS on both sides? That is the one I have and it is super quiet. When the fans spin up all you can hear is a very low hiss. It is almost imperceptible. Ed |

I've got a Soltek KT400c- anybody know if I'll be OK? TIA John |

Come to find out... it has slower memory and is clocked slower than the non-SP version. It seems that SP=XT for MSI. Have a great day, Albert |

TIA John There have been no issues with my graphics card and it's quiet and puurdy, too. Be ~very~ sure you have a PSU with plenty of grunt, else there will be problems, as with any high-end graphics card. Sounds like a PSU problem... which would be effected by many of todays video cards. Anyway, sorry about the OT rant, just had to vent it! It has the same fans as the Ultra version... and IT IS SILENT! I mean SILENT... especially compared to my Ti4200. I cannot hear the 5900 in action. Here's screeen shots: http://ap.terrabox.com/rpc/fx It's a beautiful and VERY HEAVY video card. One bit of warning - If you have an AGP locking Lever - it could be blocked by the HUGE heatsink! Remove the lever or when you have to remove the card, you'll need a screw-driver and hand-eye skills to get it undone. -- Remember when real men used Real computers!? When 512K of video RAM was a lot! Death to Palladium & WPA!! |

I've got a 420w PSU- so I doubt very much if that's the problem. Anyway, with a bit of luck my new card should arrive today and I'll soon find out... John |
