Asus P4S8X-X - Fan does NOT stop at standby / hybernation
If the fan stopped it'll die!
(If you're talking about the CPU) The fan has to spin so your PC wont fry. Maybe your old computer wasn't a P4 whereas the motherboard u have now is. Hibernate in XP if thats what youre using doesnt stop things from going. It stores things in memory before u shut down and bring whatever was there before back up again. Likewise with Standby it's not meant to stop anything either. "Pedro Sendas Pereira" wrote in message ... Hi When I standby / hybernate my computer, fan keeps spinning.... is this normal!? With my old computer everything was quiet! Is there any thing I can do ? Thanks Pedro |

Oh ok Armin. Thanx for the info!
Umm I dont use the hibernation option. It just takes up a waste of space And I dont really need it. I use the P4P800, seems to go ok, but I dont use Hibernation on that either, or Standby (yet). I think there's some update to XP to correct that prob with hibernation now. "Armin Pfeffer" wrote in message ... On Wed, 15 Oct 2003 20:39:49 +1300, "Paul" wrote: If the fan stopped it'll die! It is intended, that the fans and all other extensions are stopped, when going to S3= StandBy= Suspend to Ram in XP and also for hibernation. What Pedro is facing is one of the many times, that Xp did not properly detect the caapabilities of the Board(Bios or some drivers are not compatibel with XPs way of S3/S5 states. The result is, the computer does go into S1, which leaves all teh fans spinning and is (excluding laptops) not saving any noticeable amount of power and thus heat. Pedor: you could try to download a MS troubleshooting Tool called dumppo from MS and google for help on the usage. BootVis also could help. Other than that it only helps, ti strip down the PC as much as possible and try a step by step install of a new copy of XP. Testing thoroughly before each step, wheteht Stanby is still working like designed or not. This is the long and painfull way to go. And I many times found after some use of XP and really changing nothing ,not upgrading a single driver or Bios, not changing an option nothing and Xp looses standby like Pedro describes, falling back to S1 with all the fans and hard drives running. That's it. it's XP. And I like Linux but ACPI is much more pain here, usually you can forget it on Linux, especially on a Laptop. And , well, my (bad) ACPI experiences are with widely used and best supported ASUS Boards like P2B-s, P3B-F and P4P800 P4C800-E dlx. So go figure how peolpe with el cheapo boards and no Bios updates may be lost. |
