Default ICY Dock MB454SPF-B Multi-Bay Backplane - opinions ?

Hi

any comment on this sort of thing ?

takes 4 drives external from the pc in its own case

all removable - thinking SATA by the way

unit has a fan at the back which i think is great - removable as well if
need be

this takes 4 horiz - http://www.icydock.com/product/mb454spf.html

this takes 5 vert - http://www.icydock.com/product/mb455spf.html

Q) Would the vertical one be better cooling wise ?

if i get one i'll use Samsung very new sata drives

maybe the heat rise means the top edge gets warmer ?

opinions please

thanks

p.s. i really want to buy one !

Not with the fan working.

If not it depends on the tray system actually allowing air to move directly past the drive's interface and lid sides. It appears
from the pictures that the interface side may suffer. That may be academic though as it looks like
the cage top and bottom plates may be totally closed, no convection slits.

Eventually, if the air is stagnant. Earlier if it is not.
It's not likely to be a problem anyway.

opinions please

thanks

You better manage your obsessions.

If the fan creates enough airflow. I have had two from another
manufacturer where the disks got prettu hot, despite a fan
and the whole setup being in an air-conditioned server-room.
But these had other problems, namely sloppy PCB layouts that
causes interface errors. Had to throw them away.

No. It does not really mater, since this is forced cooling.

No. See above.

Its a pretty viable approach.

I prefer to assemble my own NAS with an obsolete
PC but that does take a bit more power 24/7

Nope, if its fanned properly it shouldnt make any difference.

Sorry, I gave up after the one failure. I would guess these
have gotten a lot better by now.
