Default GNU/Linux a viable alternative to Windows?

Any debian based or more specifically Ubuntu based OS is going to be the easiest to get rolling with. some examples include Zorin or mint or simply Ubuntu itself. if you have no experience with linux at all i recommend go directly for Ubuntu. a large part of the community doesnt like Ubuntu since it likes to "phone home" usage data and there is a built in feature that tries to sell you stuff from amazon. not to worry you can disable this within the first 5 minutes after installation. the current LTS 14.04 is pretty good its very streamlined and snappy after you install updates. you may see some bugs if you dont.

Tried out several on an old Inspiron 6000 and settled on Zorin. Everything, including the wireless card works fine. The Zorin gui is very close to windows 7 so was easier to adapt to.

It gave the old laptop a new life.
