EDM wrote: Do you seriously believe Valve has received more in revenue from reduced piracy than they've spent designing, coding, implementing and supporting Steam? No, but I bet they've more than paid for it in increased income. A game sold through a retailer probably gives them less than 50% of the sale price, a game sold through Steam gives them the full price minus the cost of bandwidth. Guess what percentage of people get the game via download. Three out of every four internet connections are dialup. Do the math. What math? We would need to know about what % of users with dial up modems also play FPS. No, we just need to know that 3 out of 4 people can't download entire games even if they wanted to. Which roughly translates into 75% of the gaming market, maybe slightly less overall. That makes no sense. The bit that ruins your assertion is the "if they wnated to" bit. We dont know if they want to or not : and I'm asserting that a lot dont want to either download or buy and play FPS games. 30% of PCs have no internet connection at all. Of the 70% that do, 75% are dialup. That leaves 17.5% as potential HL2 downloaders. What percentage of broadband users are also gamers? Figuring half (which is probably exaggerated), that's just under 9% of the market. Which part of "you dont have to download HL2" confuses you? Also, where are the figures from? Certainly here in germany everyone I know now has DSL. |

And likewise, you condemn piracy and selling 2nd hand software, and then you blame Valve for preventing what you've just condemned. How much sense does that make? I just asked you a question... what do you prefer: .. Things being imposed upon you by a Dictator (Valves model) .. Or you doing things by your own will and thinking for yourself? (My model in which after analyzing the situation of the PC Game market I decided that the best for devs and for PC Games overall to not use the 2nd hand market or lend/share games with friends) Now you choose I'm clearly in the second model and will always refuse the first model in which Valve is driving this industry into. So as you see what I "condemn" Valve is for being a DICTATOR. I don't like Dictators, and I don't want Dictators to tell me what to do. |

I think Valve will either be forced to make some basic changes or they'll greed themselves out of business within two years, three tops. |

Also, where are the figures from? Certainly here in germany everyone I know now has DSL. America, I would imagine: they're remarkably backwards on Internet access. As with Germany, everyone I know in the UK who plays PC games has DSL, and most have a faster connection than I do. It's so cheap these days there's no reason not to unless you live in one of the few places which still can't get it. Mark |

Especially the military. That whole scandal about the British hacker who was roaming their military servers is shocking : the guy deserves a medal, not being extradited to the states to be made a "fall guy" for their own incompetence. If the door is open, people will walk through it. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/4905036.stm Lend your help here Brothers (and Sisters, thanks Stan) : http://freegary.org.uk/ PC Gamer : please stay away from this crusade. As with Germany, everyone I know in the UK who plays PC games has DSL, and most have a faster connection than I do. It's so cheap these days This was the main point I tried to get over to the previous poster. Not so much as how many people have dial up, but of those, how many would be interested in HL2 and other such games. Probably not a lot. there's no reason not to unless you live in one of the few places which still can't get it. Mark |
