Default nVidia GeForce4 MX 4000 - Jerky Video

I just installed subject card in my machine and am disappointed with
the graphics. It appears as if they've gotten worse. This card is
AGP/128MB. The card it replaced was AGP/32MB. I followed the
installation instructions precisely by first deinstalling the old
drivers, shutting down, installing the new card and choosing "cancel"
when Windows prompted to install drivers. I then installed the drivers
directly from the CD. Also, I noticed that in device
manager/properties, the cards location is listed as "PCI bus 1, device
0, function 0. - Any suggestions?

Pertinent System Info:
Motherboard: Albatron KX400+PRO
System Mem: 1 GB Crucial DDR-RAM
CPU: AMD Athlon 1.7GB
OS: Windows XP Pro

what do you mean by worse ? the GF 4 MX series is not Direct x 9, or
even 8 if I am not mistaken, if you want to play todays games get a
direct x 9 card, spend the max your budget will allow to get more
performance. 50 dollar card won't bring much joy. I wouldn't buy
anything less than a 6600 or 6800.

Even if it is working properly it is a crap card.

(assuming you aren't expecting too much from the card and there is a
problem) Have you got the motherboard drivers loaded?

I mean the 128mb card is slower and jerkier than my 32mb card.
According to the box, it is DirectX 9 compatible. I understand that if
I had paid 300 bucks for a video card it would perform a lot better,
but surely (I thought), a card with 4x the amount of onboard memory
would perform better than it's predecessor...

It very well may be - but it was (supposedly) a step-up from where I
was

I've loaded the drivers for the video card. What motherboard drivers
should I be loading? Do you mean I need to flash my mobo? - The
previous card (ATI) showed up as AGP in device manager - this one shows
up as PCI - are you saying the mobo's not reading it correctly and
therefore needs to be updated with drivers?

From that answer it sounds like you haven't installed your motherboard
drivers, which is fundamental to any smooth running of your machine.
The drivers will be on your motherboard CD or available from the
manufacturers website, which will be more up to date.

What was your previous card? The amount of memory has little to do
with the GPU processing power. A MX 4000 is crap whether it has 1MB or
1GB of memory.

Update:

+ installed latest bios flash from Albatron website
+ installed latest chipset drivers from Albatron website
+ installed latest nVidia drivers from nVidia website

Result: still have jerky video (stops and starts in the middle of
play) - problems are with .wmv and .mov file types

+ DirectX9 diagnostic result (1 error - nVidia Tech Support said "it
shouldn't be a problem" - but perhaps it is.

a direct x 9 card, spend the max your budget will allow to get
more performance. 50 dollar card won't bring much joy. I wouldn't
buy anything less than a 6600 or 6800.

I mean the 128mb card is slower and jerkier than my 32mb card.

No it isn't when running the same DirectX version.

According to the box, it is DirectX 9 compatible.

I doubt it. Compatible doesn't mean "full feature set support".

I understand that if
I had paid 300 bucks for a video card it would perform a lot better,
but surely (I thought), a card with 4x the amount of onboard memory
would perform better than it's predecessor...

It would if you did an exact like for like comparison.

What kind of clip are you playing back? Check yer codecs. Does it playback
alright with another media player i.e. Zoom Player?

Have you updated other drivers, such as audio, since the graphics card
upgrade?

I just installed subject card in my machine and am disappointed with
the graphics. It appears as if they've gotten worse. This card is
AGP/128MB. The card it replaced was AGP/32MB. I followed the
installation instructions precisely by first deinstalling the old
drivers, shutting down, installing the new card and choosing "cancel"
when Windows prompted to install drivers. I then installed the drivers
directly from the CD. Also, I noticed that in device
manager/properties, the cards location is listed as "PCI bus 1, device
0, function 0. - Any suggestions?
