Default Adding second monitor at runtime

Hi all,

i want to use my GF4200 with two monitors. I have
a big CRT running at 1600x1200 and an old CRT running
at 1024x768.
If i switch both on when booting XP, everything works
fine, and i get a desktop of 1600x1200+1024x768.

But the old CRT is connected via a CRT switch to
serveral old computers, and usually only connected
when needed.

If i connect the old CRT while windows is running,
NVIEW detects it and offers
-Single display (but i want both screens)
-Clone (but i want to show them different things)
-Horizontal Region (Which could display 2048x768,
but i need 1600x1200+1024x768, with the old CRT
not switching modes if the big CRT enters fullscreen
DirectX apps).

So - how do i get the old CRT to be used as it would
be when present while booting, when i connect it
later?

thanks,
Andreas

If your switch is not set so that the second monitor is connected to the
main PC at boot-up it is exactly as if it is not connected at all, ie as
if you are plugging the monitor in afterwards.

With many older KVM switches you *have* to have it set to the PC being
booted, then afterwards switch it to the next, boot that, etc.

Nesides making sure that it's switched in / connected when you boot the
PC I can see no real workaround except maybe going down a modern digital
KVM route but that's probably overkill.....

Well, i'd prefer not to have an extended desktop unless i turn the
second monitor on.

Is there no way to cause the system to re-scan for installed displays
while running?

I'm not sure.

Technically you should never connect another monitor whilst a PC is
connected, though many people do that sort of thing especially with
laptops / projectors etc. - a KVM provides enough load to avoid short
circuits etc. when switching one in, but there should be some way of
checking.

Only think I can think of is refreshing Device Manager or maybe in
display settings advanced / Geforce, on the nview display settings
there's a "detect displays" button (or there is on the 81.85 drivers I
use).

That may work.

Good luck anyway.

Neil.
