Default Dual core Opteron vs dual core Athlon

Greetings,

I'm currently running an Athlon 4200 X2 o/c'ed to 2.6ghz. No voltage
change from stock.

I would like to get as much out of the system to extend its life as much
as possible. I just upgraded my wife's computer with an Opteron 170
2.0ghz processor from a 3700 San Diego. Big difference and it seems
faster than my system without being overclocked.

Hard drive is already there (Raptor 150). 2gig CAS2 memory. 7600GT
video board.

I like a very responsive system, but I'm not a gamer. I've been thinking
of upgrading to a more robust / faster processor. An Opty 175 is a
possibility.

Would there be a difference in performance between the 4200 X2 and an
Opteron 175?

TIA

Yes. The 175 has 1MB l2 cache while the X2 4200+ only has 512K per core.
The X2 4400+ is the same as the 175. But to be honest, they all run at
2.2GHz, so it would really depend on the apps you run and if they would
take advantage of the larger caches. if not, then they'd all run about the
same speed. Actually the one with the smaller cache would be slightly
faster due to a little more overhead of the 1MB caches of the 175/4400+.

Well, I just upgraded from an X2 2.2ghz(forget the 4400+?) to an Opteron
1212. Sam 2ghz RAM, but the Opteron runs a lot faster than the 2,2ghz! Now
it could be and probably is the memory being faster, but I like the
improvement. The only reason I upgraded is to allow for CPU upgrades in the
AM2 set.
