Default Unable to get 1280x768 on RageII

My aged father has recently bought a combined wide screen LCD TV and computer
monitor, but I have been unable to generate a 1280x768 resolution display to
suit the native screen resolution.
He has an old W98SE machine with a Rage II graphics card.

So far I've tried editing the registry directly to add 1280x768 modes for all
color depths in the same way as existing modes, and also tried editing the
..inf file but all to no avail. The problem is that I am unable to select any
resolutions other than 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, and 1280x1024, and nothing
I've tried so far causes any other choices to be displayed. I've also tried
selecting other monitor types in case certain modes were inhibited but also
to no avail.

Does anybody have some ideas that may help me?
