Default Question about the win 10 update data loss

It was my understanding that the data loss was limited to data stored
in the C: users (name of user) Documents folder. Anyone know if
that's correct? I happen to have a few files there, but haven't
noticed anything missing.

If you believe that description (and the description is different
than the first explanation I read), then a single missing folder
would be evidence of everything below that folder could be gone.

If you redirect a Junction Point from the original place to a
new place, the original folder which was the target of the
Junction Point is an orphan. You'd be checking whether that
folder exists or not.

The Sysinternals program "junction" can give the info, using
a brand new Windows install as evidence. This is what it looks
like before anyone messes with it. (Even the OneDrive folder
is allowed to mess with the Junctions.)

\\?\C:\Users\User Name\My Documents: JUNCTION
Substitute Name: C:\Users\User Name\Documents

So "My Documents" points to the "Documents" folder.

That's normal. And that person doesn't lose anything
when the 1809 update comes in.

*******

Now, let's do a second one. "Clever User" moved his Documents
to the D: drive. A run with "Junction64 -s blah" shows this.
When it looks like this, you have to check for damage.

\\?\C:\Users\Clever User\My Documents: JUNCTION
Substitute Name: D:\Documents

OK, the aborted 1809 Update comes in. What does "Clever User"
lose when that happens ?

C:\Users\Clever User\Documents

That's the orphan directory that is no longer
being used, but could still have files in it.
Any old files present before the change to the
Junction to make it direct somewhere else, are
now deleted. Microsoft did:

del C:\Users\Clever User\Documents

because they determined by examining a Ouija
board, that the directory no longer "served
a purpose of the Microsoft Corporation"

And everything below is gone.
