Default MFC Application has encountered a problem and needs to close?

I just picked up a Liteon 52x24x52 CD-RW and tried to flash to the latest
6S0F firmware. However, when I try to run the flash program I just get this
error:
XFLASH MFC Application has encountered a problem and needs to close.

I also downloaded Nero CD DAE to try and put the drive through its paces but
when I try and run it I just get "No CD-ROM drives found" (I installed
Adaptec ASPI and VOB ASAPI layers just to be sure...) and then when I click
ok:
CDDAE MFC Application has encountered a problem and needs to close.

As "MFC Application" shows up in both cases, I'm guessing these problems are
somehow related. But I have no idea what it means.

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP1 (all current updates) on an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe
(nForce2). The new Lite-on is the master on the primary IDE controller. On
the secondary controller the master is a Lite-on LTR24102B and the slave is
a Pioneer 16x DVD-ROM drive.

Thanks for your help!
Ric
