It's absolutely mind-blowing how much faster a system gets when you
just put an SSD in. You can still keep your hard drives for their
capacity, but you should pair it with an SSD for the speed.

Yes, I've decided to go that route. I'm going to go shopping on Monday to
see if I can find a SSD just for Windows 8. I was going to get a 120GB
SSD and partition it for Win8/XP dual-boot, but I think I'll just run XP
off a regular hard drive and see if I can find a 64GB or 80GB SSD for
Win8. I will install my favorite applications on the SSD and use the HDD
for things I use less frequently.

During this week, while I wait for hardware from Newegg (it should be here
Friday), I'm going to start burning things to DVD off my hard drive
because I'll have to add a partition for Windows XP. Fortunately I
finally got file sharing working (it was so much easier with NetBEUI in
the old days) so I can dump a bunch of stuff on my roommate's computer.
He's got about 360 gigabytes of free space, which is a lot more than I'd
need to transfer.

I've been researching SSDs and the limited number of writes you can do, so
as soon as I install each program, I'll check its configuration to make
sure all the data files are written to the hard drive. For the Opera web
browser, that might be a little sucky because if you have a lot of RSS
feeds, Opera is slow loading them all, which is annoying. I wish it would
load like Agent -- everything is visible immediately, and individual
newsgroups load as you select them, and Agent is fast with that, too.

I like longevity in computer hardware, too. But maybe I'm being too
cautious. Leaving Opera's RSS feeds on the SSD will vastly accelerate the
load time for RSS feeds while still qualifying as "normal use" and I may
still get at least five years of use out of the SSD before it starts
dying. But there's no telling how much writing will be applied to the SSD
without my knowing and without my being able to do anything to change it.
Some programs just don't give you any control over where things are
written or stored, and I believe they certainly should. I'd love to
control where temporary internet files are stored, and I'll have to search
to see if that can be changed.

You might be able to find some sales on for 120 or 240GB SSD's for
after-Christmas.

A 240GB should be able to easily accomodate both your Win8 and XP.

Home LAN is one of the biggest advantages of a router, too bad most
people don't know how to get it working (or even know it exists), and
just use it for simple Internet stuff.

Don't worry about the write limitations on an SSD, the worries are way
overblown. Somebody calculated that it would take you 300 years to get
to the limit of an SSD's write limits.

I like longevity in computer hardware, too. But maybe I'm being too

Just leave the Opera on the SSD. You got nothing to worry about.
