trouble with migration of programs to new pc
Just finished building a new PC system from Tigerdirect. I am attempting a
transfer of programs from my old pc to the new one with Laplink PCmover. Although this program has performed flawlessly in the past, and in fact did with my most recent transfer from a Dell to another new unit I built, I now only keep getting a "partial" transfer due to an error. It wouldn't be so bad if I knew exactly what didn't transfer- does anyone know how to view this information in PCmover? The manual and on-line support don't mention it as far as I know. I am using Win XP SP 3. Thanks in advance, Erik |

Due to all the stuff on the old pc, it would take a lot longer to reinstall from scratch than to do the transfer even with a lot of programs needing reauthorization. I could live with this "partial migration" if there was an easy way to tell what wasn't transferred. Any clues? Erik -- Conor I only please one person per day. Today is not your day. trouble with migration of programs to new pc
So why did you ask the question ?
You won't be comfortable in a very close future because the drivers you transferred may come in conflict with the new hardware or some will be missing wrt the new configuration, except if tou kept the exactly same Mobo & Graphic adapter as well as the same OS version & configuration "Erik Harddrive" a écrit dans le message de news: ... I am using Win XP SP 3. Thanks in advance, Erik If the Laplink product isn't well documented, you could try using Sysinternals Process Monitor, to track what it is doing. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb896645.aspx For example, you set the "filter" in Process Monitor, to only show "pcmover.exe" program activity, assuming that is the name of the program. If the program is having problems with a registry entry, you might see the registry entry being accessed. Or, if the program keeps a manifest file somewhere, of what it has moved, you might see it accessing that file. Pretty kludgy way of doing things, but I've fixed one problem on my PC using Process Monitor. It showed me the registry entry a program was looking for, before it failed. Be aware, that some AV products, don't mix with Sysinternals tools. It has to do with the low level facilities that Sysinternals is accessing. Kaspersky used to freeze the computer, when mixed with some of the Sysinternals programs. So the first time you try it, you could be in for a surprise :-( Paul |

A comparison program such as WMatch might help, much depends on the structure of what you are transferrring. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1790291,00.asp dadiOH |

Erik You were given the correct advice as there is really no way to"transfer" your applications other than by re-installing... (no matter what the claims of the "transfer" software) However there is one possible method that may work: Clone your drive to make sure you'll have a backup in-case of failure. then pop the drive in the new machine and without even trying to boot up... perform a repair installation. Repair installations usually work in getting a drive working with new H/W Best to uninstall your anti-virus and fire-wall first... those are two apps than don't usually survive a repair installation |
