Default Catalyst OpenGL Compatability Mystery

After performing a complete uninstall of my Catalysts per the instructions
at TweakGuides.com (in preparation for the upgrade to 4.9), a weird
situation developed: If I install the driver using any ATI installer
(either the big mega one or the driver-only installer that gets created in
a subdirectory), I get no OpenGL functionality whatsoever. Zip. None.
SiSoft Sandra tells me I don't have OpenGL installed and OpenGL games like
Doom 3 simply won't boot.

If I install the driver using Windows's Add Hardware wizard (manually
pointing it toward the correct directory), OpenGL works just fine. However,
when I install this way (which requires me to separately run the individual
WDM, Control Panel and Control Center installers), I don't get access to
SmartGart. It's not the end of the world, but it'd be nice to be able to
use it in the interest of having maximum command of my system.

Does anyone know what might be causing this complete OpenGL failure? It's a
complete mystery to me.

If I install using ATI's installer, things get even worse after I throw
Control Center into the mix--if I do that, the screen image degenerates
into a mess of diagonal lines about 30 seconds after Windows starts,
forcing me to launch in safe mode so I can run the uninstaller and begin
the whole process from scrarch. It's kind of a nightmare.

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide!

Did you install the ATi Tray Tools? Anf if you did, are they version
1.0.0.370? If thats the case, just update them. In version 1.0.0.371 this
case is fixed.

I don't have ATI Tray Tools installed. Is installing it likely to help?
