Can a flat CMOS battery slow your system down?

It will be a few days before I can get a new one in, and unless it's
something else causing it, my PC seems to be lagging a lot since I started
getting the Warning! System battery voltage is too low warning. I thought it
would just be a risk for your BIOS settings getting lost, but

a) can this have an effect on my system when booted to Windows

and

b) what happens if the battery goes completely dead - will it still boot,
and just use the bIOS defaults?

a dead battery would not slow your system down "per se"
but if all settings were lost and your bios went back to defaults...
that could slow your system down.

good point...your time and date would probably have been reset...
so why not check your settings in the bios and see what happened.

i know i've reset *some* of my bios settings due to static electricity...
such as shuffling across the carpet in winter and plugging a device into
a USB port

You need to change it out as soon as possible. I had one go dead in
the middle of a boot and it wound up a real mess.

Normally, it just sets your bios to default and you have to reset your
clock. But, I wouldn't want to take that chance.

Probably, although it's possible that your OS corrects this before you
notice.
