Default Can't install Linux on Proliant 2500 - not enough memory? (224Mb)

Just got my hands on a Proliant 2500, it initially reported it had
only 16Mb. I ran the system erase and on the second boot it then
announced it had 32Mb (system options not set). Once the system
configuration utility has run it correctly reports it has 224Mb (3 x
64Mb + 1 x 32Mb) however when I try to run Knoppix it only finds
11,264Kb and unsurprisingly fails to build a ramdisk. Similarly SME
Server install exits with a 'The system has insufficient RAM to
install SME Server'.

The system is configured for Linux as the OS and everything reports
fine in the SCU just can't get it to accept it has 224Mb installed.

Anyone shed any light on this? I'm about to reduce it to 128Mb and see
if shuffling DIMMs makes any difference.

Regards,
Jason.

I've just done some DIMM shuffling and each time the memory count is
correct on boot, memory initialises fine but Knoppix can only see
11,474Kb.

Very puzzling...

I had the same problem with my Proliant 2500 with 1024Mb.
With Google i found this bootparameters:

linux mem=exactmap mem=640k@0k mem=15m@1m mem=1012m@16m

this works with my 1024Mb machine.
You should find the parameters for your Server with this Link:

Which kernel are you trying to boot 2.6 needs different parameters. I run
SME Server v6.0.01 ion a 2500 with twin PPRO and 1 Gig ram no trouble.

Bad.

You could try to browse it using archive.org!

And the molution to the mem-problem is to append mem=xxxM@16M, where xxx
is the amount of memory built in less 16M.

IIRC the problem is related with the EISA-bus and a memory-hole caused
by it.

Thanks for the pointers however it's worth noting that the goalposts
have changed between the 2.4 and 2.6 kernel. The old mem command no
longer works, but memmap works fine.

My machine now boots into Knoppix perfectly using...

knoppix memmap=exactmap memmap=640k@0k memmap=15M@1M memmap=208M@16M

Thanks to all who posted.

Regards,
Jason.

Exactly as per the website. The BIOS in these machines has a bug in it.
They report only 16MB. My 1200 and 5000 have this flaw; my 7000 does
not.

For a 2.4 kernel you'd need to specify:
mem=exactmap mem=640k@0m mem=223M@1m

and for a 2.6 kernel you'd need to specify:
memmap=exactmap memmap=640k@0m memmap=223M@1m
