I've just done some DIMM shuffling and each time the memory count is
correct on boot, memory initialises fine but Knoppix can only see
11,474Kb.

Very puzzling...

Just got my hands on a Proliant 2500, it initially reported it had
only 16Mb. I ran the system erase and on the second boot it then
announced it had 32Mb (system options not set). Once the system
configuration utility has run it correctly reports it has 224Mb (3 x
64Mb + 1 x 32Mb) however when I try to run Knoppix it only finds
11,264Kb and unsurprisingly fails to build a ramdisk. Similarly SME
Server install exits with a 'The system has insufficient RAM to
install SME Server'.

The system is configured for Linux as the OS and everything reports
fine in the SCU just can't get it to accept it has 224Mb installed.

Anyone shed any light on this? I'm about to reduce it to 128Mb and see
if shuffling DIMMs makes any difference.

Regards,
Jason.

Which kernel are you trying to boot 2.6 needs different parameters. I run
SME Server v6.0.01 ion a 2500 with twin PPRO and 1 Gig ram no trouble.

Tony

How did you do this? I tried this same version and it spat the dummy.
Did you upgrade the firmware or anything like that and did you instal
direct from CD or did you use some other method?

Yep ... i used archive.org. most recent cache was from 11/2004.

That site is very dated from what I can tell -- lots of older info
that isn't specific to newer software releases.. Some things of
interest, but not all..

Add the appropriate form (mem= for 2.4 and older kernels, memmap= for
2.6 and newer) on the kernel definition line in grub or lilo

Example for a system with 256 meg of ram:
Kernel-2.6 memmap=exatmap memmap=640k@0m memmap=255m@1m

And yes, the system doesn't use the ram between 641k and 1023k

If you search this forum there are plenty of examples

I have been exchanging email with the admin from www.cpqlinux.com/

He is based in Houston and has experienced downtime caused by the
hurricane. He is currently looking for people who can mirror the site,
in case this happens again.

New content is on the way. I just submitted an article myself.
