I'd recommend Serious Sam 2 and Will Kill. These two games pay homage to
the doom style of gameplay. Little on the puzzle side, but heavy on the
fragging.

Hi, I'm glad someone mentioned ringworld, halo is such a blatent rip. It
also stinks. When comparing looks and games, look at what you need to be
running this on. If the game requires a 2000+ 5900/9600 system shouldn't it
look like it. All the other games mentioned max payne 2, half life 2,
unreal 2, unreal 2003, all look way heavy. They have or promise a varity of
creatures/characters, textures, lighting. Bassically art.
Halo doesn't even look like it was that impresive years ago. The
world looks and details very dated and the whole thing looks and plays like
they wanted to make it kid friendly for Rod and Tod Flanders next door.
The one thing I did like was the simpified vehicle control. (In some games
I find it hard to go from fpshooter mode to all of a sudden being a great
flight simulator pilot).
I'm suprized no one mentioned the A.I. or lack of. If you learn to run
at the enemies (what are there three different kinds) you can pretty much
walk up beside them and have high tea before blowing their brains out.
For the $60.00 canadian they want for it. Not even interested (and when
it comes to games I'd buy almost anything, to try). $20.00 bargin bin
where'd it be with out the name and the hype, maybe if it played and looked
like a game that was on a 2.0Ghz computer, not just needed one)

How long do you think it would take to build a Ringworld?

Depends... With our current EARTH technology... never.... or maybe a
few thousand years.

Ringworld (the book) had an automated system to keep it working..
until it broke down

The trick to building something like a RINGWORLD (AKA HALO) is some
high-tech anti-gravity way of moving a **** load of mass with little
effort. A good size maybe about 1000 miles long and 75 miles across.
Perhaps about 10 miles deep (walls) and 1-2 miles of below surface
structure. With rotation, that should (speculative) keep the AIR
inside... sure takes care of any "re-entry" issues of space craft....

A ring edge would always face the sun, but slightly off - so the
other side gets light... Daylight time would be well under 12 hrs... -
which can be good for plants (maybe not all kinds).

Of course... using the materials for a parked astroid would make it a
lot easier (if you have the tech to build a RingWorld - you'd have the
tech to snag and use up astroids).

So, even in the full game they die the same way. Rag doll means your
legs and arms may be bend in odd ways.

No, the point of ragdoll physics is to mimic real life movement of a
body. From what I have seen of Karma in UT engined games, it falls a
long way short of being believeable compared to the likes of Halo and
HL2.

Agreed... but the KARMA engine is tweakable (from a programers point
of view) and its more for fun than realsizm I think.... sure beats the
OLD way.

I agree with your 100% HALO looks dated next to Unreal2... not even
close to Half Life2. But I've just finished playing HALO, the whole
game just recently. I am a long time Unreal player - since the
Voodoo1 days!! (4mb video card - 640x480 only). I can see why Unreal2
sucked a bit more in the STORY area... since its basiclly HALO.

Heres my scores: (H = Halo / U = Unreal 2 / T = UT-2003)

H U T : What & Why
* : Story - More Scifi classic, better put together.
* : Plot - More scifi classic, less GAME-LIKE.
* : Music - very good, and funny at times too.
* : Characters - NPCs are better done, more lively. FUNNY too.
* * : Weapons, Fine in both Unreal2 & Halo - sucked in UT2003.
: All 3 games have sub-standard player control. UT is better.
* * : Graphics, Halo is bland, no lighting effects as in Unreal2.
* : "World" design - Halo feels more REAL and better done.
* : Character "running effects" - they look ODD in Unreal2/UT2
* * : "Rag Doll effects" - Halo doesn't HAVE Rag doll.
* : Single player game, HALO is quite good.
* : Multiplayer interface for HALO is crap. UT2003 is okay.
* : NPC sounds, Halo kicks ass in this regard... fun.
* : Map Design, When inside structures of Halo, rooms look alike
and your going in and out of these room... this is their BIG flaw, its
like they created FILLER. And back tracking about a mile in an Alien
base is NOT fun. (when you cross the bridge twice each way) - Short
cut (use trainer, be GOD and jump off bridge on way back). I dont
think any human or alien would make so many twisting hallways that
DON'T serve any purpose but making you turn left and right. Worse,
the Human Battle cruiser - hanger type area on the top was STUPID.
The same type of ending for Unreal2 is a bit more intense and harder
because of the lights, gravity and even less time.

After playing the REAL game, I stand by my original statement that
HALO does NOT have rag doll. Yes, it has flailing arms and legs when
characters are blown up. But these are built into the game... all
players fall dead the same position... same with aliens.

Theres no gibs, that sucks too.... microsoft is so "Sensitive".
****, Microsoft is Michael Jackson and its customers are 12yr old
boys.

The one thing I did like was the simpified vehicle control. (In some games
I find it hard to go from fpshooter mode to all of a sudden being a great
flight simulator pilot).

Halo was a bit tricky... but *I* would put a HORN on the jeep... so
you can WARN players to get their attention... since you cant shoot or
throw anything. its too easy to KILL your own team mates (Im not
talking hit an run, but by accident when you start and they are too
close). I guess Bungie LEARNED how to make a player move better, I
had the experince of playing Deus Ex, which even for its AGE, it LOOKS
quite good... looks very good. Characters look great when they move.

BUT, the controls are NOT USER CONFIGURABLE! And they are
complicated!! You have about 8 different ways to move in wach
direction, and the movement type is not something I'm used. It should
be normal movement controls and PRESS a different key for Sliding /
punching and kicking... not tap twice, hold down shift and press F key
etc etc... So Deux BLOWS in my book... too bad.

The "SUV" in UT2003 is horrible to control... about 3 times worse than
the jeep/hummer/GIJOE buggy in HALO.

I'm suprized no one mentioned the A.I. or lack of. If you learn to run
at the enemies (what are there three different kinds) you can pretty much
walk up beside them and have high tea before blowing their brains out.

Yep... fairly basic AI... you get in their range of operation and they
try to kill you. But I like sticking a gernade on them and watching
them RUN AWAY before BOOM!!

I hope UT2004 is good... I want a killer game... with graphics, good
map tools, good weapons and vehicles.

I enjoyed your review, I just wanted to ask one thing. Are you talking
about Deus ex?

Or is that Deus ex on PC or on something else? The deus ex I have is
easy to change the
movement and attack button settings. Right from to start menu. Oni by
bungie can be hard to change the settings on. you have to open a file,
maybe with a hex editor I can't quite rememeber. I think to the intention
of Oni's key combinations is to emulate some of the great arcade games.

Anyway like I said I only played the demo of Halo and wasn't very
impressed. I'm very disapointed we'll be waiting longer for UT2004. I can't
believe a company would miss the holiday blitz like that. I just played the
demo for max payne 2...and it's off to the store I go... Soon as I get the
cash that is...

OOPS! Sorry my mistake, you're RIGHT - it's ONI that is a bitch to
play. How stupid. I didn't get far into Deux Ex... I was bored of it
by the time I got done with the training. With ONI, I was frustrated
by the time I got done with training. I was stuck running into walls
because it didn't like my mouse or something and no tweak controls,
etc. Edit a binary file? Thats VERY retarded.

Game companies should LEARN from Unreal and UT, ****, even the UT2003
team should learn something from UT.... Editable TEXT FILES... EASY
user control.

Emulate great acrade games? I don't recall them being crap... Arcade
games don't have mice. I've heard the controls for the game was hard,
bit it was far worse than I had imagine. its a shame, the graphics
and the moves are top notch.

AW! UT2004 is missing a window that Half Life2 blown... now is their
chance before the onslaught of Half Life2 and Doom3... When I see the
screen shots of DOOM3 to HL2... Doom3 doesn't look so good.
