Upgrade with the same 8800GT card...huge difference
Finally splurged and did a major upgrade on my primary workhorse computer,
my venerable Opteron 185 2Mb (2.9Ghz) with 2 Gig PC4000 OCZ in an A8N-E m/b. This has my tweaked Galaxy 8800GT OC 512Mb unit. Went with an E8400 retail box unit on a Gigabyte EP35-DSR3 and 4 Gig OCZ PC6400 Platinum. Still using the same twin Raptors in RAID0. Well, let me tell you, the performance jump is vast. My best 3dMark06 run with the old system and the 8800GT was 10,400. The E8500 at 3.5Ghz does 13,000. I know this is a highly CPU dependant synthetic bench but I was surprised at the jump. Kind of makes you realize it's not a really good GPU benchmark. |
