Default Help - HP PSC 2510 - STIMON causes invalid page fault in HPGTPUSD.DLL

I know: this is a recurrent topic. Having searched on the web I couldn't get
a working solution.
Environment: Pentium III, 1GHz, 768MB RAM. Windows 98.
Hardware involved: HP PSC 2510, connected via Ethernet.

After installing the stuff (drivers, extra software, etc, Spanish version
3.5.0) and rebooting windows, STIMON.exe dies because of an invalid page
fault in module HPGTPUSD.DLL.
Trying to determine the properties of scanning using HP Director raises a
communication error with the scanning device.
The Windows Device Manager says that the driver for "HP PSC 2500 SERIES" is
running fine. Clicking the "Details" button, it says that the only file is
VMM32.VXD
Also, asking for the properties of the device in the "Scanners and cameras"
entry on the Control Panel cause a new error on the file STICPL.CPL

Any hint will be really welcome. Thanks in advance.
JAMM

PS: BTW, stopping Stimon from running on boot and exec'ing it manually
doesn't help.

You may have Window 98 problems, which require a clean install of Windows
98. Clean install means reformat HD and install Windows 98 then all your
programs.
Do the above as a last resort!

Windows 98 plain or 98 Second Edition? If plain or first edition then you
may have problems with the USB. Be sure to run Windows update.

The first thing I would do is download the latest driver for the PSC 2510.
Choose your model (there are two). English link below.
