What exactly happened

A little more to the ongoing stroy...

Fearing the collapses of the C drive, I tried to get the DVD writer
working (It's been down for a couple of months; It writes to CDs but
not DVDs) to backup. The After Dawn forums have a group on Nero
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/240783 . They suggested
deleting the NVIDIA nforce IDE controller. I did, and Windows installed
three controllers in its place
Primary IDE Channel
Secondary IDE Channel
Stamdard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller
All of which claim to be "working properly".

The DVD writer still doesn't write, but now SIGuardian reports the
names of the HDs correctly. The C drive doesn't look so good:

So now I'm using Ghost 2003 to clone the C drive to another, one that
I previously used for movies.
Ghost froze at 25%. I restarted and it went through a long process of
repairing. Windows is back up now, the cloning failed, of course, and
I'm going to try again.

That is most likely just a failing DVD burner, not a config problem.

The After Dawn forums have a group on Nero

That just means there are no resource conflicts.

Yeah, dont like the reallocated sector count.

I'd still like to see the Everest report.

So now I'm using Ghost 2003 to clone the C drive

An oddity about the temperatures:
When the drives heated up (after I had something to read the
temperature), they _all_ did it, and they didn't reach a critical
point.

Regarding the DVD/CD drive...
Do you think I should reinstall the NVIDIA controller(s)? I would think
that would be preferable because it's specialized. The alternative is
the Windows controllers that are now doing the job. You suspect a
hardware problem with the DVD writer. It might even still be under
warrantee. I'll have to look. The people at AfterDawn
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/2/240783 have abandoned my
thread; maybe they don't have any more suggestions.

Back to the HD problem:
If the C drive is to sick to clone,
My other option is to fresh install Windows on a blank HD, which would
be my 160 GB H drive. Then I'd have to reinstall all the programs,
etc, but at least then I'd be able to move up to XP's SP2. (not
that I think it's necessary, though). I gave up on doing that on C
after I spending about a month and a half on it. However, I'm sure
SP2 would install on a fresh XP install.

You know... maybe I'm going to do that. I'll partition off a
section for Linux, which I've always wanted to try, and I'll make a
duel boot system. Can I have FAT on one partition and NTFS on another
of the same physical drive? Linux takes FAT doesn't it?

Best to use a forensic cloner that can handle bad sectors.

free, but I havent looked for one either.

I'd try the burner in a completely different system,
thats the easier way to see if its died.

Yeah, thats really the main possibility now, that the
burner has died and it can no longer burn DVDs.

You have checked that its not just fussy about the media presumably ?

Yes it will. I prefer to slipsteam SP2 onto the XP distribution
and install from that, safer with drives over 128GB.

Linux takes FAT doesn't it?

The question about the old, existing, C drive is moot because I've
already decided to abandon it (although I'm still using it), but I'm
curious what you would find in this report that would spell it's death
knell.

And what does "offset" mean in those tables below.

Also, why do all the drives increase in temperature in unison? You said
that behavior is normal.

What I meant on the question of file systems was, what file system
should I use for the Linux partition? I'll use NTFS for the Windows XP
partition, and I thought that wouldn't work for Linux. I thought Linux
supported FAT. I'm working on this issue now. I'll figure it out.

Drives always heat up after power on.

I didnt mean to imply that the temps will track exactly,
they dont. When you have drives stacked adjacent in
a drive bay stack, with no spare slots between them,
the drive sandwitched between two drives will get
hotter than the one at the bottom of the stack etc.

What I meant on the question of file systems was,
what file system should I use for the Linux partition?


Its generally best to let the distro do what it wants with drive space.

I'll use NTFS for the Windows XP partition,
and I thought that wouldn't work for Linux.
I thought Linux supported FAT.

I use Motherboard Monitor (MBM 5) and am pleased with it.


How does MBM know the temperature of disk drives?


It uses the SMART temperature with hard drives.


How do I configure it? I have MBM 5.


Its a little counter intuitive.

There is a tick box in the MBM config to use the smart temp from
the hard drives in the General tab of settings, right down the bottom.
Once that is ticked, MBM has to be restarted before that tick takes
effect. Once you have restarted MBM, the hard drives that have
SMART temp are available in the list of sensors you can select
from with the temperature sensors.

Its covered in the MBM help.
