Default MS optical Intellimouse acting wierd

I've got a MS Intellimouse (optical) hooked up to my PC that's been
given me some weird problems. It was working fine until the last few
days. Some times when moving the mouse the movement lags, other times
it seems to stop for a few seconds and then starts to move, and then
some times it just stops moving. When it stops moving the only fix is
to reboot the machine.

I've made sure I don't have any viruses. I've also terminated any
other program to make sure it wasn't some kind of background program
acting up. The mouse is connected to the mouse port which looks to be
fine as I've put in an old MS mouse that is working fine.

Any ideas as to what the problem might be, or how to fix it?
Thanks for any help.

Sounds like you have one of the original Intellimouse Explorers Mk1. It has
a design fault, where the wire breaks internally at the top of the mouse.

My one broke while still under guarantee and MS UK sent me a new Explorer
Mk3.0 as a replacement.

Search on the internet for many sites on how to fix it...

Sounds like you are running out of Memory slowly over time. It is hard to
find memory leaks.

Mr. Paranoid here, but there seems to be a new kbd. as well as other
hardware buffer program that will track movements of a mouse. How do I
know? I just recently bought a new Logitech mouse at Wal-mart (I'm cheap)
that lights up when accessed or used, and the damn thing looks like a
Christmas tree at times when it really shouldn't. I've had reasonable
success with uninstalling it in device manager, then re-booting which would
eliminate software conficts if that is your problem. Take it easy.
