Default Soft vs. hard errors?

When writing CD-Rs, what are soft errors as opposed to a hard errors?
What causes soft errors? Is CD Speed the best program for detecting
soft errors?

Depending on the drive, software with much more capabilities may be
available - for Lite-On drives, you can get the KProbe utility which will
allow you to measure the numbers of C1 and C2 errors. Newer Plextor drives
can do the same with Plextools..

An error is "soft" if rereading allows it to be corrected; it is "hard"
if repeated reading cannot determine the correct value.

The only programs which might be considered "better" are from Arrowkey
and are expensive. I like the plot from Inspector, but wouldn't spend
the price for it if CDSpeed had been what it is now at the time I bought

it.
