Compaq Presario XP Number not Valid
A friend bought a Compaq Presario from Future Shop. It has a valid XP
sticker on the case, but when the Microsoft validation tool sees it, it refuses to accept it as a valid Product number. Is there a work around for this? She never recieved any media from them for the computer. 1) Buying XP and not having the appropriate drivers for the board.?? 2) Obtaining a set of restore disks?? 3) Buying another computer?? |

Tell them your issue, and since you bought the machine form them, would they please fix the issue. If they don't fix it free, become progressively less nice, up to, and including getting the credit card company involved. (PS: shops can be brutal, back up any important documents first!, they might just do a system restore) |

Compaq Presario XP Number not Valid
Odds are that Future Shop installed XP using a generic OEM version of XP. The
codes on the HP, Compaq, Dell, IBM-Lenovo, and Gate-machines are all keyed to work with a vendor-specific version of the Windows install. There are ways of dealing with this, beyond the scope of this newsgroup. By all means, Future Shop has to sort it all out, and a threat to report them to the Microsoft software police-and-lawyers for software piracy would get a response really fast...
