Default Compaq Presario s6010v PSU replacement?

Had a power surge during an electrical storm and it got the PSU in my
Presario s6010v (hopefully that's all).
Looking for a replacement for this. The one that came with the system is a
Bestec ATX-250-12z.
I have a Bestec ATX-250-12e that I had taken out of a spare emachine T2040
that I have. Could this be used as a replacement? If not, got a suggestion?
Thank you!

Default Compaq Presario s6010v PSU replacement?

Modern Compaq P4 systems use a standard ATX12v power supply. The eMachine
power supply and the Compaq one have the same 250w rating, and ought to be
pretty much identical. Make sure that the eMachine PS has the 4-pin keyed 12v
connector required for P4 systems. I would guess that the "e" in the part
number of one denotes a power supply made for eMachine, and the "z" for HPaq...

Steal the power supply from anything BUT an emachine (or a penturn 2
or 3 dell, for an entirely different reason). Those things are toxic.
They kill emachines dead, to the point of needing a new motherboard,
new power supply, and sometimes even a new processor.

Good news: it's standard ATX, an off the shelf spare will do.

Good point, except that the same junk used in eMachine computers are now also
used in other name brands, notably HPaq. back when eMachine first started up,
its computers were assembled by Daewoo in S. Korea, and you could change the
front bezel, external color and BIOS splash screen and you would have an HP
Pavilion. From the choices of power supply cited by the OP, HP now uses the
same schlocky parts in its Presarios.

But yes, eMachine power supplies are toxic, and this goes beyond the toxic
materials used in their manufacture. If you go to eBay, you will see an
extremely active market for pretty expensive motherboard replacement for
eMachine boxes, both P4 and AMD Athlon.

A Dell P2 or P3 power supply would probably fry a P4 motherboard due to the
different pinout on its ATX connector, but one would hope that someone
unwittingly trying to use one would notice that the 12v connector required by P4
systems is missing... Ben Myers

Default Compaq Presario s6010v PSU replacement?

FWIW, the Bestec ATX-250-12z is the same power supply as inside a Lenovo/IBM
ThinkCentre micro-tower I am working on right now. A lot of the parts inside
the ThinkCentre carry Foxconn tags, and I'll bet that the system is a Foxconn
contract assembly job.

I think that the legendary IBM quality has gone steadily downward since even
before the selloff to Lenovo. MSI motherboards are in a lot of the IBM P4
desktops. (For a while, IBM P4 systems used Asus Socket 423 motherboards. I
was never in love with Socket 423, but Asus stuff tends to be pretty decent.) Of
course, that's the same MSI famous for blown motherboard capacitors. The
system I am working on right now has a motherboard with a SiS chipset, low-end
if there ever was one. So, like, who makes a quality computer any more?

The following is from the Bestec web site:

Bestec was established in Taiwan in August 1986 and listed in the Taiwan Stock
Exchange in January 2004 (No. 3308). The Company focuses on a diversified
product portfolio comprising 4 segments :

.. Adapters (for fax/printer/scanner/notebook)
.. Standard PC power supply (PS II 200W ~ 500W, SFX 90W ~ 220W, PS III 90W ~250W)
.. Open frame & power module (3W ~ 200W)
.. Server power supply (800W ~ 1200W)

The Bestec ATX-250-12e that I had taken from the emachine wasn't the one
that came with it, this was the second PSU the emachine had put in.

Tried it and it worked....for about 10 minutes, then shut down. Hasn't come
on since. Bought a new Antec PSU, replaced the memory stick, checked the CPU
and they all are working but still won't come on. Looking like the MB is
gone. That sucks.
