Unusual DVD-rom problem
About two weeks ago I started experiencing problems with my DVD-rom (TEAC
DV-516E). Sometimes when I'd put CD/DVD in it and the reader started accessing it, Windows (WinXP Pro) would literally freeze, like the older Windows used to do. I couldn't even move a mouse pointer across the screen, nor did the ctrl-alt-del do the trick. The only solution was to restart the computer by pressing the reset button on the case. The reader is connected to the secondary IDE channel as the slave device; primary one is a TEAC CD/RW drive. It seems that the type of medium doesn't really matter, although some particular DVD's/CD's cause more problem than the others. But, that same CD's/DVD's can often be read after the restart. My first idea was that something went wrong with the OS, so in the end I reinstalled WinXP. But, the problem still persists. Somebody suggested to me that it could be a power problem, but I find it very unlikely, since most of the time CD's/DVD's can be read without any problem. Could the problem be in the IDE cable? Nevertheless, I'm becoming more convinced that the problem is in the device itself (it's little more than one year old). Does anybody have any suggestions? I'd appreciate any help. Thanks. Sizif. |
