It's realy dependent on the user but general rule of thumb is -
If you're not going to use the puter for the next 24 hours, turn it off; otherwise, leave it on... I know that if you leave it on 24/7, you better keep it in a very dust free room, or you'll be cleaning the CPU, PSU, and case fans more frequently. My brother's computer room is in the same room the washing machine, and dryer reside. Their PC runs 24/7, but I'm usally having to blow the dust out every 2 months, or so with his compressor to make sure it doesn't burn the PSU, CPU, or GPU out. I only run mine when I'm using it, and it only needs to be cleaned every 8, or 9 months. I'm also running an Athlon XP 3000+ with a GeForce 4 Ti4400. |

To some extent it's a religious issue. In the real world it doesn't make a whole Hell of a lot of difference which you do. Only real benefit to turning off is that you save a little bit of electricity. ...Syn... -- --John Reply to jclarke at ae tee tee global dot net (was jclarke at eye bee em dot net) |

I leave mine on 24/7 to let it run Folding@Home. Haven't noticed any extreme problem with dust, but I do clean it out every now and then. But I have to do that to the computers I have that aren't run 24/7 anyway. The power usage is not that huge especially if you have the monitors and hard drives power down after a period of non-use. As for the electric bill - I guess mine went up a little, but I really didn't notice. The FAQ for Folding@Home: http://folding.stanford.edu/faq.html#misc.power estimates about $0.36 per day at California's electric rate of $0.15 per kW/h. I think I pay about $0.10, so my rate would be considerably cheaper. A computer that is completely idle uses VERY little electricity. If you are going to keep it on, consider a distributed computing project like Folding@Home, SETI@Home, Prime95, or one of the many others. At least then your computer is doing something useful. -- "Outback" Jon Gould | Let those who RIDE, 2003 Kawasaki Concours (wreck)| 1976 Honda CB750F (needs work)| DECIDE. 1972 Yamaha DS7 (project) | | HELMET LAWS SUCK CQ CQ CQ de KC2BNE | ______________________________|___________________ _________ AMD XP 2400+ @ 2180 MHz 1GB PC3200 DDR @ 290 MHz Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe 120GB and 40GB Maxtor HD Asus GeForceFX 5600 (330/650) Cornerstone 21" Monitor Sony 52x32x52 CDRW NEC MultiSync 17" Monitor Sony 8X DVD+-RW Nostromo n50 Speedpad http://folding.stanford.edu - got folding? That occasional spike is peanuts, energy consumptionwise compared to 24/7 use, unless your active PC use comes close to 24/7. When I started shutting down my Desktop PC when I wasn't using it instead of letting it run 24/7 my electricity comsumption dropped from 20% in winter to 30% in summer. Furthermore PC's hardly die from failure due to excessive on and off switching. The vast bulk of PC's is still in perfect health at the time they're dumped because their hardware is incompatible with today's standard. It might well be that running a pc 24/7 is better for the components, but the gain is irrelevant for almost every PC users if you include the economic lifespan of the current PC you're using. 24/7 is a decision, maybe because you run a web- or FTP-server, or because it's part of a network constantly used. If it comes to possible damage, in practice 24/7 or switching on and off is an non-choice. -- CeeBee "I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve." Furthermore PC's hardly die from failure due to excessive on and off switching. Not true - this is exactly what eventually leads to component failure. It's my job to know... |

Thanks for the replies, i was just wondering. I do pay my own electricity
bill and have 4 pc's, 3 of which i don't turn off. My main gaming has a 6000rpm Thermaltake HSF on it, due to the level of noise that only bothers me when i'm not exactly usin my rig is why i power it down in the evenings. My light bill has been not affected all that much with 4 rigs runnin constantly. Wifey is not fond of it, but she only complains a lil. Thanks again, for the responses. ...Syn... |
