I'd be more than happy to "roll my own", but for one problem - if there were to be any problems, I'd not have available a ready supply of components to swap out for fault-finding. And buying in extras would rapidly use up any money saved in the first place by home-building. Even a crummy commercial outfit has that advantage over the one-off would-be system builder.
