P4 overclock for MSI board
Hi,
I'm having a little trouble with my motherboard overclocking options, I have a MSI ms-6534 motherboard and it is able to clock up to a 2.2 ghz CPU. Well I have a 2.5 Pentium 4 CPU, and I understand that I am over my limit but like when I loaded it up the CPU was only going at 1.9 ghz.....please tell me how I can clock the CPU up to the max (2.2 I guess), I am kinda hoping that it can do its full.... ------------------ System Information ------------------ Time of this report: 9/3/2005, 18:52:08 Machine name: TRIGGERHAPPY Operating System: Windows 2000 Professional (5.0, Build 2195) Service Pack 4 Language: English (Regional Setting: English) System Manufacturer: Micro-Star Inc. message... I have a MSI ms-6534 motherboard and it is able to clock up to a 2.2 ghz CPU. That's not strictly correct. It's probably capable of running a faster CPU than that. However, the 2.2GHz 400MHz FSB CPU is the fastest it *officially* supports. Well I have a 2.5 Pentium 4 CPU, Methinks you mean a 2.53GHz Pentium 4. Important difference, as your CPU runs on the 533MHz front side bus. That's a slight problem as your motherboard - officially again - only supports 400MHz CPUs. but like when I loaded it up the CPU was only going at 1.9 ghz..... Not at all surprising given that your motherboard defaults to 100MHz FSB and your CPU has a 19x internal multiplier. 100MHz x 19 = 1.9GHz please tell me how I can clock the CPU up to the max (2.2 I guess), To do that you'd need a 2.2GHz 400MHz CPU. All that system summary, and you didn't think to tell us what type of memory you have. Do you have PC2100, PC3200, something else? Depending on what overclocking options your mainboard offers, and depending on what memory you have, you may be able to run this CPU at its full rated speed. The first thing you will have to check is whether the board has any BIOS based clock setting functionality. If it does, you will need to set the front side bus at 133MHz. You will also have to set the memory bus divider and memory timings according to the RAM you have installed. If you want to tell us exactly what (if anything) you see in the motherboard BIOS's clock speed setting section, as well as tell us about your memory, we'd be able to help you more specifically. -- Richard Hopkins Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom (replace nospam with pipex in reply address) The UK's leading technology reseller www.dabs.com |
