Default Nvidia NV40 and NV50 - interesting discussion

Beyond3D discussions

It seems the NV40 has been in development since April 2002. loooong
before the FX 5800 came out. And the NV50 is said to have started
development around the same time.

The NV50 seems to be Nvidia's "mega project", one for which they are
pulling out all the stops. NV50 cannot fail. NV50 is do-or-die for
Nvidia!

In the mean time, NV40 based cards should appear around Feb 2004, at
the soonest. Probably more like early-mid spring, though. As for NV50
based cards, obviously they won't appear until sometime in 2005.

The R&D / development timeframes may be true, I don't buy the notion
that Nvidia had placed all its eggs in the NV50 basket. They have
expanded into other areas and will continue to do so. not everything
rests on NV50, or any one technology. It's called diversify.

Personally, I find it a bit troublesome that months before anyone gets
a peek at NV40 some people seem to be apologizing for it already.
"NV40? No big deal. The real biggie will be NV50!"
