Default TV out with GeForce 6100?

Hi all,
I have an Athlon 64 linux box which I'm interested in using as a PVR.
I am quite happy with the integrated NVidia GeForce 6100 video, but
there is no TV-out connector, only a VGA connector. There are a whole
bunch of cheap VGA-to-RCA cables on eBay (e.g. this one
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tegory= 41999)
and I'm wondering if they'd work with my system.

That item and others like it warn that "It will only work with laptops
and desktops with VGA cards that has TV-Out function capability through
the VGA connector".

So, will these cheap converter cables work with my system? I couldn't
find any info on the NVidia web site about whether the GeForce 6100
video supports "TV-out through the VGA connector".

Thanks for any help!
Dan Lenski

Anybody? Anybody know anything about VGA-to-TV cables? Please :-)

1. Nope, those cables won't work.

2. Depending on the motherboard make and model, there may be an onboard
header for hooking up an S-video outlet. Consult your motherboard manual.

3. I'm assuming you got all the other requirements for PVR sorted out
(tuner/capture card, timeshifting software, etc.)?

Gotcha, thanks. I figured as much :-(

Yeah, I have pretty much everything sorted out. I will try to find the
header on the motherboard.

Here's one twist on the question: I *know* that NVidia GeForce 6150 has
TV-out support in the chipset. Does this mean that a computer with
GeForce 6150 will have a header on the mobo for TV-out, even if there's
no external connector for it installed?

Despite support in the chipset, the motherboard manufacturer may choose not
to implement the header. Again, read the manual.

Most likely the situation is gonna be stupid, where the motherboard has the
header, but you can't find the breakout bracket for sale anywhere. And when
you find it on eBay, it will cost more than a standalone Geforce 6200 with
TV-out...

Interesting. The reason I'd rather not go with a separate card is
because I'd like to do this in a slim case with only 2 PCI slots and no
PCI-EX. I figure if there's a header on the motherboard, it'd be okay
cause I can make a little circuit board for the breakout bracket and
get some kind of ribbon cable to join 'em. I'll check the mobo manuals
as you suggest.

Thanks!

Dan
