Default graphics card help

hello,

i have intel p-4 2.4 on ausu p4vp-mx motherboard with 256 mb ram, it
uses onboard VIA ProSavage8 Graphics. i'm considering to purchase new
agp card of 64 mb for good gaming performance.. existing on board is
32 mb & not working with some games.

i want to know whether i need new card of 64 mb or else, is there any
way that works like 32 mb of onboard graphics + 32 mb of new card if i
purchase card of 32 mb...

advice me ... thanks

You may need more than just a graphics card.

Main memory of just 256 MBytes may also be a real bottleneck, depending on
your operating system and the games you wish to play. Especially since your
built-in graphics on the motherboard uses main memory.

You can't combine built-in graphics (part of the chipset that uses main
memory) with a graphics card; one must be disabled.

You really ought to list the games you wish to play; many new games that
require even a moderate amount of 3D acelleration probably won't even
install on your present system (main memory limitation, display adapter
limitation, display memory limitation.) Diablo II is likely at the limit
for your present system, and it doesn't even absolutely require 3D
acelleration.

Your Pentium 4 2.4 GHz on an ASUS (not ausu, I am assuming) isn't the latest
and greatest, but it doesn't need to prevent you from playing almost any
game, especially since with an ASUS motherboard you have a good chance of
easily overclocking it to 3 GHz or more with stock cooling.

What DOES keep you out of power hungry games is
#1. built-in graphics adapter
#2. low main memory size (256 MBytes)

A new graphics adapter with only 64 Mbytes is going to limit the games you
can install, much less play, and graphics adapters with only 64 Mbytes
memory are going to be at the bottom rung of performance for the Graphics
Processing Unit.

There are many, many good games that don't require a huge amount of
processing power and graphics display power, but these games are NOT first
person shooters. To get very far into that genre you will need at the LEAST
another 256 Mbytes main memory, and a 128 Mbyte ~ $100 US range graphics
card. And you will still be locked out of some of the newest first person
shooter level games. But that may not be the kind of games you want to
play.

Why don't you post a list of what you want to play? I'm sure you will get a
lot of suggestions of the minimum upgrades you need. If you want to play
the newsest 3D action games at medium-high resolution and eye-candy, you
might even need to start over; faster CPU, faster FrontSide Bus, faster and
more memory, $200 USD range graphics adapter, bigger power supply, better
motherboard (VIA chipsets aren't the greatest, and may indicate other
conrners have been cut).

My favorite games have been of the Sid Meyer's Civilization series type.
THAT kind of game, even the newest, Civilzation IV would probably work
nicely on your system with an extra 256 MBytes of main memory and a $80 US
FX5200 level 128 MByte display adapter.

A 64MB card is a waste of time.

if your realy set on a low end card then get a fx5200 but get atleast 128
meg ram.
just go to newegg.com and pick one that is in your price range. the thing to
watch for is the Memory Interface: 128-bit is what you want not the 64bit
interface.
here is one for $38 shipped that will do you just fine for low/mid range
gameing and some of the newer games will run on it also but dont be counting
on things like battel feild 2 to run.

i personly would pick a ati 9600pro or even non pro for my low end video
card it will play most games if not all games at reduced settings. but the
cost is gona be around $100.

now if your realy wanting to play some new games thin look at the 6600gt or
the 6800gt and also the ati x800 all ar not top of the line but are still
good video cards for gameing.

now as for that 256megs of sys ram you realy need 512 or more so while your
at it pick up a nother 256 megs. if it was my computer i woudl pick up a 512
meg stick and have a total of 720 megs .

for around $150 - $200 you will end up with a computer that will play some
newer games and will play older ones great.
