Looks like the added heat from the second GPU required a full-sized vent on
the slot bracket, so the HDMI port is deleted. The DisplayPort connector is now the mini type. Interesting dual-orb cooler on the 5850X2; I believe it's a first for a reference design. http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/news/...mages-surface/ -- "War is the continuation of politics by other means. And the 8+6 pin power connectors are back, and at 376 W TDP per card, for
good reason. -- "War is the continuation of politics by other means. It can therefore be said that politics is war without bloodshed while war is politics with bloodshed." My 4870 runs Crysis on a 22" monitor just fine. I haven't seen anything come down the pipe line worth purchasing for the 5870 to run on. In fact, the game industry seems to be stuck in a holding pattern for the last two years. On top of that, you can's 'purchase' the software any more, you only get to rent it for limited use only. I think that until the game industry gets this DRM out of the way it's not going to go anywhere, and the hardware isn't going to get pushed as much as it has in the past. That's to bad, because it's the games that have pushed innovation in the graphics market more than anything else out there. So games, and the hardware that run the games, are at a standstill until DRM is reduced to a level that gamers are willing to tolerate. No more phone-in or Internet registration, and no more live Internet connection required to run the games. Screw Steam, I want a piece of hardware in my hand today, and a year from now, that when I purchase a game it requires no outside registration or server to run. William |

That's to bad, because it's the games that have pushed innovation in the graphics market more than anything else out there. I think this is partly the reason for AMD to develop Eyefinity: since the games aren't becoming more demanding, it's better to increase the immersion and push three times the resolution. The crazy thing is, the 5870X2 still has a Crossfire connector on top, so quad-GPU setups are possible, with hypothetical 752 W TDP if the game scales properly. So games, and the hardware that run the games, are at a standstill until DRM is reduced to a level that gamers are willing to tolerate. So download a no-CD patch for it from either megagames.com or gamecopyworld.com . -- "War is the continuation of politics by other means. It seems that Bethesda is going in the right direction. While Fallout 3 required an internet connection to activate, the subsequent mods removed the necessity of even needing a CD in the drive to run. Of course the first thing I look at now is the mention of internet connection needed either to run or activate. If it is present I move on. Maybe if enough people refuse to buy games that require the internet to run the manufacturers will get the hint. Even Microsoft does not require an internet connection to activate their OS or use it, unless they changed that in 7. William |

I'm pretty shure my Fallout 3 for Windows didn't need online activation. , the subsequent mods removed the necessity of even needing a CD in the drive to run. IIRC you never needed the DVD in the drive if you started the game via fallout3.exe instead of fallout3launcher.exe. Benjamin |

I couldn't agree more about Steam, although once games are registered and updated they run just fine without an internet connection, or even a CD. Just set Steam to offline mode. It's a far more intelligent approach than other protection schemes, e.g. Midway and their horrid StarForce protection. The sons of bitches squeezed their ass cheeks so tightly together, they greeded themselves straight into bankruptcy. As if gamers would be willing to watch their CD and DVD drives die premature deaths and have their system security and performance severely compromised, just to run 20 year old arcade games? Simply astonishing stupidity and greed. |
