Default 4870 compat for Striker Ex.

I bought a 4870 512MB VGA card and find it wont POST. I get 1 long & 3
short beeps. Reading a few groups suggested an incompatibility with my 680
and 780 mobos. Has anyone got one working on their system. I have just
spent a load on this and don't want to have to buy a new mobo too.

TIA

Robin

The error indicates no video card. Have you connected power to the back
of the video card? Do you have a PSU large enough to run the extra
current the 4870 draws on the +12V rail(s)?

Check the VIP forums.

Are the two PCI Express power connectors installed ?
Does the power supply have enough juice for a 130W video card ?
(HD 4870 is 65W in BIOS, 130W in 3D games, according to
Xbitlabs.)

Try the primary video card slot (nearest processor) or consult
the manual to see if there are any "preferred" slots for the
first video card.

Strip down the system to the minimum, removing USB devices
or anything else which might cause a resource conflict. To
get the BIOS screen to show, you might even disconnect
the hard drives temporarily.

If still stuck for ideas, see if you can borrow an old
PCI video card. (I keep an FX5200 PCI for that purpose,
and it comes in handy if flashing the BIOS chip on a
video card.) If the BIOS finds the FX5200 or equivalent,
maybe you can run Everest and see if the new card is
enumerated or not. (That tells you the bus interface
on the card is working a little bit.)

Cheers Paul I haven't got a PCI card but I could try it along side my
current card in another slot. The PSU is an 850W generic unit which I
purchased last summer as the Hiper 880W unit died on me within an hour of
starting up. I'm not too sure of the rails but I will check it out and see
if I can find out. I know the current 2900XT I have draws a lot so I
assumed that this would be up to the job of powering a 4870.
I will experiment over the weekend.

Thanks

I tried installing the card again and watched the display. The PSU is only
good for 20A, is this enough? The motherboard blue LEDs start flashing and
the LCD poster shows `DET DRAM'. A few minutes later the beeps come and
then the PC starts but without video display. Yes both 6 pin PCI-E
connectors are fitted though one is very tight to get on and fails to push
fully on (both fit perfectly on the 2900XT). it's only 0.5-1mm but would
that matter. Then I tried the 2900XT on the primary slot and the 4870 on
the secondary slot but without PCI-E connectors on it. The same thing
happened! I gave up then and put it back to original and all's well again,
for a while.

That seems low, especially for a 850W power supply. My 450W Seasonic
puts out 29A at 12V.

It is probably a quad rail, with each rail having 20A (and then an overall
limitation on total 12V output). Which should be plenty. Knowing the make
and model of the power supply, would make it easier to find a picture of
the label on the side.

With an 850W, I would be careful to find a wiring diagram or a review
of the power supply, and make sure both PCI Express connectors are coming
from the same rail. If a power connector won't seat, examine both
ends visually and figure out why.

The card is not going to be happy, if the power is not there. I don't
think it works like my old 9800Pro, where if the Aux connector is
disconnected, you get an onscreen display that says to connect it.

On the Striker Extreme if the video card is not getting the 12v power you
will know it from the siren like sound you will hear......:-) I ran 2 8800
GTX cards on mine and once forgot to attach one of the four extra plugs and
it almost drove me out of the house.......

|Now that you mention it I remember that siren from other PC's and maybe
even from this one on a previous occasion. I must just give up and declare
it a dead DHT 4870Card. I could just eBay the cooler and recover a little
of my money.

Thanks

Robin
