Default Dark screen viewing DVD plreview..help please

Win 98SE
Athlon 2.2
Nvidia GF4 mx 440 (bios v 4.17), and Driver v 4.13.01.2832
256 mb ram

Unable to increase brightness of screen via Nvidia card.
My monitor brightness controls are "max" .

I did manage to increase with a newer driver, but it was not the
default, so PC started in dark mode then suddenly increased in
brighness.!!....reverted back to current Drivers due to PC being
"unstable"....not necessarily the Vid card tho'.

TIA
