Default BAD peformance of all single SATA drives on Asus P4P800/P4C800 mobos?!..

And as if I have not hawked the Raptor enough, I forgot to mention in comes
with a "legacy" 4-pin Molex power connector built in so no power adapter is
need.

The WD Raptor does make more noise than the WD 800JB, well, not so much

more
noise but a higher pitched more noticeable sound than the 800JB, the

price
to be paid for 10K RPM. I was a little concerned at first listening to

the
Raptor outside of my case, but once I got it installed with everything
running I only hear it when it powers up and I have a water-cooled rig

built
for quiet. I think the 800JB is the quietest HD I have ever owned so

maybe
a straight comparison is not fair, but to say the Raptor makes more

sound,
or at least a less aesthetically pleasing sound, is accurate.

Thanks for the info - a noticeable speed increase indeed. One

question,
how
noisey is that Raptor? How does it compare with noise to the WD? Oops,
that's two questions.

I also have a single Raptor, but running on an Asus A7N8X Deluxe,
achieving
an almost identical HD Tach 2.61 Average Read speed:

Random Access Time: 8.4ms
Max Read: 78446 kps
Min Read: 31531 kps
Ave Read: 48586.6 kps

I also have a WD 800JB "Special Edition" PATA drive w/8MB cache:

Random Access Time: 13.5ms
Max Read: 49135 kps
Min Read: 24291 kps
Ave Read: 40461.4 kps

In addition to confirming Gilles's Average Read speed, this shows a

38%
increase in Random Access speed, and a 20% gain in Average Read

speed
against one of the faster (once the fastest) PATA drives out there.

This
is
all, of course, due to the 10,000 RPM platter in the Raptor and not

the
SATA
interface, but regardless it is FAST and the SATA cables are so much
easier
to work with I very enthusiastically recommend getting a Raptor if

your
circumstances will allow it.

Hi,

In following review about the Asus P4P800 here
http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NDg0LDM=they mention in

the
"IDE/ATA Performance" section: "The SATA single drive

performance
is
the
worst of the bunch, trailing the IDE drive results by

approximately
10
MB/s on both the average read and write performance." They even

posted
test result screenshots so you can see it for yourself.

Does this mean if I only gonna use 1 harddisk with this mobo, I

better
take an IDE harddisk instead of a SATA harddisk?! I can't

undertand
why
single SATA is so bad on this mobo, since SATA is integrated to

the
Southbridge on the P4P800 (Springdale) which should give good

results,
RAID or no RAID?!

I am not giving up on this yet, so perhaps people who already

have
the
P4P800 and use a single SATA drive could tell me what there read

and
write speeds are with there drive. Fact is they used a Barracuda

SATA
drive in there test, so perhaps other single SATA drives will

score
better?! I was planning to buy a single Maxtor SATA drive with

this
board, so first I want to know if single SATA drive performance

is
really that bad for all drives with the P4P800 or not! Normally
7200rpm
drives can get around 60MB/s I believe, so with SATA (connected

to
the
Southbridge) it must be possible to get higher scores, even with
single
drives, not?! In there test it was quite the opposite ("single

SATA
the
worst of the bunch")!

So I would really appreciate it if people who have the Asus

P4P800
(or
P4C800) mobo and use a single SATA drive (so no RAID) could post

there
read and write speeds!

PS: if you buy a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 SATA drive, does it

also
have
a regular IDE connection in case using it that way would give

better
performance in a single drive setup.

Thanks in advance!!

Mike.

Agreed, never would have gotten it if I didn't already have to 80GB drives.

Sounds good but I need it to be more GB for bucks... and cheaper bucks at
that... before I make the move over. Obviously the future though and I

think
they will take over sooner than people think.
