Default GA-8IPE1000 L chipset drivers

I recently purchased a GA-8IPE1000 mb and proceeded to install the
chipset drivers on Win98. I popped in the CD and the gigabyte menu
came up but the only two options available we

a. install onboard LAN, or
b. install onboard Audio.

The manual shows an install screen for WinXP and it shows an
additional selectable item i.e. install Chipset drivers but it is not
available on Win98.

I looked on the CD and found subdirectories for Win98 (for LAN, Audio
and Chipset drivers). The Audio drivers installed perfectly, the
Chipset drivers would not install and the error msg indicated my OS
was not supported. The LAN drivers installed but the system would not
boot afterwards. I later found out that I required a patch to fix
this. I found a newer version of NDIS.vxd and placed it into my
\windows\system directory and the system booted. The newer ndis.vxd
file was from Win98SE and this problem is known by MS:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...NoWebContent=1

I went to Gigabyte's website and they do list chipset drivers for
Win98 but they do not differentiate between SE and the original
version of Win98.

Does anyone know of a fix/patch to allow the chipset drivers to be
installed on Win98 or do I have to upgrade to Win98SE or higher in
order to get the drivers installed?

That's correct It's better for you to chance from Win9x / ME to XP.
The i865 / i875 is not completely supported by the older OS from
Microsoft. For example HT will not run.

Thanks Udo. I was leaning towards XP but was trying real hard not to!
