Default compaq proliant 4500 server 100 MHz

Hallo

can someone tell me which version of windows is best to run on this
dinosaur although is has more to do with an airplane when starting up
... (hehe)

note to the professionals amoung us : what is best for simple
internetsurfing and some music - word stuff ? Windows NT 3.51 ? ,
windows nt 4.0 or win 2000 ?
Actually , if the interface is not that difficult I would like to use
the server version .
Now someone tell me : does windows NT 4.0 make my dinosaur run properly
?
Is it possible to use a simple internet explorer and an outlook express
on this machine ?
Is the interface - server installed - comprehensible for an
experienced PC -user ?
To be honest : I do not trust windows 2000 very much
to show some of the facts in my case :
I boght the server proliant 4500 100 mhz with 1 processor
there are 4 hdd's
ram - memory : 130 MB
the batteries of the array - controller were at full charge in about
several hours +/- 4h ( letting it run )

i bought it for 30 euro and the lady was very pleased to get it out of
her office
the new price for this server was amazing in 1993 : a little more than
45000 us dollars (for the version with 4 processors and a lot of ram -
memory

kind regards

let me answer my own questios myself :
I got these links from compaq and after this all it WILL work :
first of all : to boot ANY operating system larger than dos , you
schould use the HP SMART CD ; it is called HP because Compaq is now a
part of HP such as Audi is a part of VW
To download this cd ( you schould unzip it first and then burn it to a
cd-rom et voila : there you have the boot - cd -rom !
remarks from the specialists : first boot with that cd -rom , then must
the entire system be erased . Then reboot and follow the assisted
install for nitwits like me .
link to that cd -rom :
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/fi...oad/22678.html

To make your proliant 4500 work properly on an operating system , take
the following link :
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/fi...odTypeId=15351

et voila there you see all operating systems for your dinosaur proliant
4500

last but not least : I am from Belgium , if anyone around here has a
proliant 4500 133MHz and he or she wants an additional processorboard ,
you can have it for free if you can give me one for my proliant 4500
100 MHz

some great peope wrote their articles about troubles with recognising
some cards during installation : be aware that you haven't downloaded
an infected file , in all other cases it MUST work !

kind regards and many handclaps for the friendly mister at Compaq (HP )
Belgium

see you later , dino's ...euh...alligators

Seriously... Run a version of Linux. Second choice might be Windows 98.

Hi Ben ,

have you experience with running Windows 98 on the proliant 4500 ?
In fact I REALLY LIKE windows 98 because it's very stable and you can
do a lot with it although it takes only 240 MB from a hard disk
I am just wondering if it works on a SEVER !? Do you use the
smartstartcd also before installing ? Do you use it also after
installing ? Or don't you use it at all ?

Let me know your experiences about it please

kind regards

Bart

P.S. : some people schould know there is a proliant which HAS 3 IDE
buses on the motherboard , it is on a 133 version , I have the prove
pinned up to the wall as decoration .
If anyone schould have it , it is for free but you have to give me a
processorboard for the proliant 100 MHz .
My 100 MHz is without ide but with eisa don't confuse with easy because
it ain't easy at all ... hehe

The chipsets on the Proliant 4500 are not exotic, so Windows 98 should be just
fine. I would not complicate the installation with any Compaq server-oriented
software... Ben Myers

Thanks Ben ,

Do You know a link to a good bootdisk to boot my proliant 4500 with
recognition of the cd - romplayer ? The cd -rom is SCSI and the bus is
EISA . The model is 100 MHz

I hope You can get the time to answer my requests ...

Bart

P.S. : it doesn't work with an OEM bootdisk

Oops! EISA is a complicating factor, isn't it?

The Windows 98SE boot disk image available for www.bootdisk.com , named
BOT9810A.EXE has DOS-mode drivers in CONFIG.SYS for non-EISA Adaptec SCSI host
adapters. What you need to do is determine the manufacturer of the SCSI host
adapter in the Proliant, then find a DOS-mode driver for it, and also a Windows
95/98 driver. This does make the whole task more difficult... Ben Myers

The whole point of a Compaq server is that it runs Compaq server software.
Windows 98 is NOT fine - you don't get any of the goodies that sun on
servers with it. Anyway, is there a SmartArray driver for Windows 9x?

To some extent, I agree with you. The system may or may not have a SmartArray
driver for Windows 98. Probably not. However, the OP wants to make a different
use of it, which is his choice. I would be more comfortable with the computer
running NT 4.0. I would be even more comforatble with scrapping a 100MHz system
(with few or no upgrade possibilities) that is maybe 10 years old, and running a
6-or-7 year old Pentium II or III system. But the OP has his financial
constraints and has to live within them. The punch line still is that Linux is
the most suitable operating system for an old computer... Ben Myers
