Well, looks like I will stay with XP for my gaming in the forseeable
future. Everything else I do on Linux anyways...

Unless people start to "just say 'No'" they can pretty much
set any terms they like.

My guess is that many people will be unwilling to pay for the
update until they run into problems with XP. Unless MS engineers
something XP shoud be fine even for gamers for some additional
years. And MS engineering something could land them in hot
water with the EU, so my guess is they will not dare.

If past experience is any indicator, all the new machines from
Dell et al will come with the new version, which will have some
seemingly minor new "features" (i.e. inconsistencies) that will
create issues for those who choose to stay behind.

They have already engineered something. It is called DirectX10. I'm sure XP
could fully support DX10 but MS will only provide it with Vista.

Lets see about this. The EU might not have looked into this
so far, but they might. Even if they do not, I can live perfectly
fine with DX9. And I expect some game developers will use the
occasion to move to OpenGL, which would also prevent them having
to recode everythign when MS decides to do a new internface.
