Default ASUS P2L97 best choice for SDRAM

Hi,
I am working on ASUS P2L97 motherboard, to which I want to add some
memory.

ASUS alows a maximum of 128MB per slot. I have bought 256 MB regular
DIMM modules at a computer superstore, of which the board only
recognized half. I then read in the manual
(ftp://ftp.asuscom.de/pub/ASUSCOM/HAN...l97-ds-104.pdf)
that each row can handle a maximum of 128 MB. So I went and got 128 MB
DIMMs of which it only recognized 64 MB.

I checked with Kingston and found out what they recommend for this
board, but found the prices quite steep.

Would it be okay to use three 256 MB sticks (and let the mb use half
of each)since they are much cheeper?
