Default Dead PL6000

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone out there could offer any advice for the
following problem...

I have a PL6000 dual Xeon that will not POST. The Interlock LEDs say
that everything is normal. However when I turn on the system all of the
fans power up, the drive array briefly lights and then nothing further.
The LCD display does nothing except show its firmware level and the
system does not display any video output. There are no POST beeps or
anything further of any sort.

Prior to this problem the system would boot ok but I was getting a
message saying that the internal battery was getting low, and needed
replacing.

I have scanned the manuals on the HP site and if i understand them
correctly if the nonvolatile ram is corrupt the server will at least
have a go at some sensible defaults, and this wouldn't cause the sort
of problem that i am seeing.

In conclusion - can the battery cause so much of a problem or is the
real source of this problem likely to be something else?

Any help at all would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Whoops - sorry.

I forgot to mention that I have tried resetting the NVRam. But it made
no difference.

I attempted to change the battery but it appears to be to be stuck
fast. I was afraid that I would damage the IO board if I pulled too
hard. I cannot see propery underneath of it and it looks like it might
be soldered in place. Is this likely?

Thanks again.

The battery probably is soldered in place, although I am not sure
for that model.

Take a look at the inside of the cover. There should be a chart
showing the location of various switches, headers, and other items. Is
there a 4 pin header strip identified as an external battery input?

The replacement battery is most likely a generic computer battery,
with a short cable used to attach to this header, rather than a
direct replacement for the original battery.

If you can determine the spare part number for the replacement
battery, it might be possible to confirm what type it is.

It is possible there is a significant difference in price between the
Compaq/HP spare part battery, and a generic battery that would
do the same job. It might be about $50 for an HP spare, as
opposed to under $10 for a generic.
