how to tell if a ide cable is ultra dma & is it realy needed for a 133 mhz drive?
How many old ide cables. though they would work fine with my maxtor 80
gb 133 mhz drive in the ultra dma 133 mhz mode. but its not so. Only reach speeds of 27000kB/s. Is the ultra dma 133 mhz ide cable necessary for usage of this mode & getting full 51000 kB/s advertised by the manufacturer!?! please advise |

Yes, you need to use the correct rated cable.

A conductor on that cable tells the drive that it's the correct cable. All 80 conductor cables made to the ATA spec, will work from ATA33 up to ATA133. Some drives must be set to the higher mode. ATA133 is mostly advertizing "hype", since no present drives can generate data that fast. Of course, your MB or controller card must support the higher mode. -- A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds,........ Ralph Waldo Emerson (Microsoft programmer's manual.) |

80 wires = Ultra
40 wires = less than Ultra On Fri, 19 Dec 2003 00:49:30 +0000, dsads wrote: How many old ide cables. though they would work fine with my maxtor 80 gb 133 mhz drive in the ultra dma 133 mhz mode. but its not so. Your use of the ATA33 cable will dramatically lower your scores, but don't expect to get 51000 KB/s in Sandra... that's closer to 10K RPM SCSI territory. Dave |
