Dual monitor setup with Radeon 9000 series
Has anyone been using a dual monitor setup with any of the Radeons in
the 9000 series (ie 9000 Pro, 9600, 9600XT)? I've heard it can be done with a "dongle" to convert the DVI output to a second VGA connector. I'm very curious how well it works; I'm considering a dual monitor setup for my upcoming new build - mostly for video editing. Are there performance or stability issues? Do games (like UT2003) screw up? Or can they be played across two or more screens? Any constructive comments would be appreciated! Thanks, ECM ~~~~~ Please don't use the email address; it's a spam trap! |

Radeon 9700/9500 series: Till now I've only used the S-Video output for dual screen to the TV, but for the sake of your query (and my own curiosity), I just hooked up a second monitor to the DVI "dongle" (supplied with the card) you mention. The ATi software that's bundled with the card makes the dual setup quite easily configurable, but I don't have games loaded to be able to answer that question, thus I can also not comment on the performance or stability issue. One certainly has the option to allocate a window or application to either or both screens. I guess how well that allocation is handled depends on how well the specific application is able to do the same. HTH. |

I think I'm going to go for it with the ATI 9600 - it should be plenty fast enough for two screens. Really, the main issue for me is video editing - my programs support having the video preview window fullscreen on one monitor, and having editing controls on the other. The speed of the card is secondary - I play a few games (like UT2003, which plays fine on my Radeon 7200), but only occasionally - I just wonder whether these newer games will allow multiscreen display..... Anyways, thanks for experimenting! ECM |
