Default visioneer onetouch 5300 usb scanner and win XP??

hi all -

i recently purchased a visioneer onetouch 5300 usb scanner... i got this
scanner working on a windows me system a friend of mine has. well i brought
it home and tried to get it to work with my system, which runs win xp
professional, and for the life of me i cannot get it to scan properly.
whenever i scan i get a SOLID BLACK picture. i know the scanner works on a
windows ME box, i just have a feeling it's something with my XP config,
driver, or SOMETHING? here's what i did and maybe someone can help;

- installed the visioneer onetouch 5300 usb win98/Windows ME, Windows 2000
driver from here = http://support.visioneer.com/drivers/5300u.exe
- downloaded the following .dll files from www.dll-files.com - which i
placed in c:\windows\system [i have tried to move them to the c:\paprport
dir as well as c:\windows\system32];

maxkernl.dll - maxcodec.dll - maxutil.dll - pperr.dll - maxrast.dll

- rebooted the machine, without the scanner hooked up... let the system
fully boot, and then pluged in the scanner, it found and used the newly
installed driver for the 'visioneer onetouch 5300 usb scanner' - the scanner
is detected correctly. i am able to push the scan button on the scanner, and
it attempts to 'warm up the light' then tries to scan... everytime it scans,
it only displays a solid black image... i've cleaned the scanner surface and
everything... i've tried many different images to see if it wasn't picking
up the colors or something, but that is not the case. i've tried to
uninstall the drivers, and reinstall them, etc... i have verified after an
uninstall that the dir's c:\paprport, C:\WINDOWS\inf\vizPnP, and
C:\WINDOWS\TWAIN_32\paprport\5300USB were fully removed, then proceeded with
a reinstall of the driver, without the scanner connected to the system, and
with it connected - i've tried doing this proceedure along with putting the
required dll files listed above in the differeing directories [:\paprport,
as well as c:\windows\system32 and just c:\windows\system]. i cannot figure
this out in winXP, i've read others comments on www.driverguide.com that
they have gotten this scanner functioning in XP, yet i cannot get it to SCAN
a picture and have it return proper colors.

i've tried with ALL the different settings in the paperport scanner program,
black and white, greyscale, color, etc... 36output, descreen, etc... i just
comes up solid black image when it scans... can anyone make a suggestion to
help me? it would be truly appreciated.

thankx!

[now im gonna try to get this to work with linux....]
