Default CHKDSK

CHKDSK has suddenly started running on one of my secondary (is that the
right phrase?) partitions (NTFS) when my PC starts up. The SMART report
appears to give the HDD a clean bill of health. Why is CHKDSK running and
how can I stop it? All I have on that partition is my Acronis True Image
files.

Thanks.

Keith.

XP can get its tiny little brain scrambled like that, essentially losing track of
successful chkdsk runs, so it decides that it needs to be run at startup time.

Try a manually initiated chkdsk run and see if that will update the status properly.

If that doesnt fix it, do a manual cleanup of the registry.

This didn't work.

I think this is a little overkill for the problem, would my only other
option be to restore the OS image from my backup?

Presumably you mean it made not difference to the symptoms.

If that doesnt fix it, do a manual cleanup of the registry.

Nope, it looks very like the registry is in a bit of a mess
so it cant record the fact that a chkdsk has been done,
so there is no need to do one every time it starts.

You could try a restore point.
