TV as a monitor

I have just got a new 40" LCD TV. It has HDMI and D-Sub inputs and I have a
new DVI-HDMI cable and a standard DSub cable.
Through D-Sub, I can get the TV to 1360x768 (or something like that) and all
is well. This is not the native resolution of the screen so doesn't look
perfect, but its Ok for now.
I want to get the HDMI lead working with 1920x1080 as the TV is HD 1080.
When I connect through the HDMI cable, the only resolution I can get working
is 1280x720, which is OK, but lower than I can manage through D-Sub. When I
set it to 1920x1080, the TV just goes black (both 50 and 60 hz). If I drop
the freq to 30Hz, then I get an all green picture, but it's no use to
anyone!
The DVI-HDMI cable was a cheap one from ebay - its a 1.5m cable with gold
connectors, but is this likely to be a problem? I don't know how the quality
of a cable would affect this - could a low quality cable manage 720, but not
1080??

I have contacted the TV supplier for support, but in the meantime - any
ideas?

I forgot to add that my graphics card is an AGP Radeon 8500. On a shuttle
SK41. Athlon M 2500. Just used for internet, music, DVDs and viewing photos.
I have remote desktop so can recover if things go wrong on the main TV
screen.

Have you tried varying resolutions and seeing where you hit the limit?

I'd try that... Not sure that will help but it might yield some clues.

GT Yes - the limit seems to be that over HDMI, it can manage 720, but not
1080. There are no HDMI resolutions between these 2! Its only a 1.5m cable,
but I'm beginning to suspect it - there seem to be some cables sold as
"Truly 1080". Think this is linked to the 1.3 version, but other sources say
that 3m cables shouldn't matter!
