The correct way to install new drivers?

OK what happens is this. If you have ever downloaded them even just once

will always be on the system and will be installed if they are the newest
drivers.
You can uninstall them, but that doesn't delete the files. They are still
on
the system and will always be there unless you can find out exactly where
the
files are being stored by windows. It's probably a cab file like someone
else
mentioned, but I wouldn't delete it because it probably also has other
driver
files in it. You could try renaming it like someone else mentioned, but I
would
restore the original name after your done.

If you shut off the update service and it is actually off windows will not
overide that to make a connection for drivers.

Why don't you just cancel the installation when windows restarts?


Ok you both [Flow / PRIVATE1964]. Cab file is a compressed file like ZIP /
TAR / RAR etc.... Driver that Windows use are not in COMPRESS form. Driver
that Windows normally place is in System32 and System. Windows mainly store
/ place in INF folder. This folder is hidden so you will need to unhidden it
to see it. For nvidia driver, you will see some file that look similar to
this NV4.inf etc... this is just one of the main driver. You can not simply
just delete it, you will need to go through registry to remove it link. I
strongly NOT TO delete or remove BUT go through Add/Remove process procedure
instead. UNLESS you KNOW WHAT you are DOING.

So the question now focus on CAB file to whether it can be delete / rename.
The simple answer is.... YES. If you want to be in a safe side, you can copy
/ rename it and place it somewhere else until you believed it needed, then
you can copy it back or rename it back.

If you care to view what in those CAB file, you can use any compression
tools like Winzip / WinRAR etc....and yes, you can use XP compression tool
that build into Windows Explorer [file manager].

Yes you can do that, he knows that I believe. You can not stop windows
from
searching and installing drivers that Windows has already in it's files.

I have disabled everything possible and believe me,after a few seconds my
drivers are installed after reboot so i immidiately see that the pc is
downloading them,takes a while.This is only after i uninstalled the
previous
drivers.
But , i reinstalled my windows which has sp1 on the same cd and now i
don't
have this anymore.
So i believe the original poster works with one of the first xp pro cd and
has sp1 on a separate cd.
This was my previous situation and i had exactly the same probs he
describes,only thing to do was to switch off the Lan-connection or remove
the internet wire untill you are ready,then put them back in/on again.This
way windows asks you to install auto or manual,just browse to your desired
drivers.

If for some reason the top poster does not have this option anymore im
afraid his install is damaged.
I for instance never had a sound icon in my taskbar after installing a
LAN.But now with my new install it's there alright.

try unplugging your internet connection than rebooting, that will stop
windows from downloading the drivers drom the the update site, but than
windows may revert to the driver.cab and sp1.cab files. so you would need to
take other steps that i stated a few days ago in this thread.

You can delete the INF file. If there is a pointer in the registry its just
gonna point to a file that does not exist so nothing will be installed. In fact
you can go through the INF folder and delete all the INF files you are never
gonna need to save some space on the drive.
