Canon i850 - Red bars across my image...why?

Default Canon i850 - Red bars across my image...why?

I have a Canon i850 printer that is about 18 months old. It has been
printing fine, but suddenly I am noticing a problem. Whenever I print
an image at the standard or draft quality setting, I have horizontal
reddish colored bars showing up. The space between the bars is the
same size as the bars themselves and the whole image has the bars,
from top to the bottom (think US flag). If I print in high or
grayscale quality, the bars are gone.

I have tried cleaning, deep cleaning, head alignment and nozzle check
all to no avail. I have the newest drivers and the only hardware
change I have made since it last printed ok was the video card, a
nVidia 6800 ultra. I am not really sure if the problem existed before
I changed the card. I don't print all that often and I often I just
print text so it would not be noticed.

Any thoughts?

Print head is either clogged or cooked. Since you are still getting good
prints at high quality settings, it may just be clogged. Remove the print
head and soak the head in hot water and Windex for 15 min, then wipe clean.
If that doesn't do it you can try a cleaning kit like the ones sold at
www.inkjetsaver.com . These will clear ANY clog.
It's best not to use the printer in this condition.

"all to no avail", does that mean the Nozzle Test looked OK, or did it
indicate a problem?

Without more info can not state for sure this is the issue, but YES, a video
card or video driver change can effect print output.

Any thoughts?


Post results of Nozzle test and Alignment (+/- settings needed) , Same
symptoms from more than one application?
was previous video card also Nvidia?

If the printer works fine at hi-res (when all nozzles are being fired), but
does not at low-res (when reduced nozzles are used) than 'clogging' would be
unlikely. In either case before I would suggest something as drastic as a
HOT water and alchohol bath, I would want more specific information
(confirmation).

Actually, this is exactly the sort of thing you see when ink flow is
restricted, I know I have. The volume of ink flowing at high res is lower
than at normal res. (ml per minute or whatever you call it)
Ink flow is often restricted in the Canons, not in the head but in the
passage from the tank to the head. This is caused sometimes by leaving a
tank out for too long, or an improperly seated tank..

How's this for an idea...

Is it coming off on the exit rollers? Check to see if the size of the bars
matches the exit rollers.

At low quality the printer prints faster and therefore there is less time
for the ink to dry before it goes through the exit rollers. At high quality
(even though more ink is put down) the printer is going slower so it dries
before it hits the rollers. Try a different make of paper.

I will clarify a bit regarding the nozzle check. Two of the printed
samples, L and M both show the horizontal bars I was talking about.
Nothing else does.

I did check the rollers, but I would think they would leave vertical
bars on an image. Mine are horizontal.

My previous video card was nVida as well. My nozzle settings are as
follows:

A 0
B +2
C +2
D 0
E -1
F +1
G 0
H -3
I 0
J +1
K +1
L +1
M 0

I get the same results no matter what picture I print. I have not
changed paper yet, but it worked fine for the previous year….

If you are getting horizontal bars in L and M, but the black grid above is
clear and complete then you are probably looking at an alignment or service
issue on the unit itself. If the black grid at the top is broken (missing
pieces) and a cleaning or two does not resolve, then a new printhead may be
neeeded.

This is correct and doubtful anything to do with rollers

With the exception of 'H' nothing looks far off, but I would reseat
printhead and then run another alignment to be sure.
