What motherboards are based on Intel 915 and Intel 945 chipsets
Which current motherboards are based on Intel 915 and Intel 945
chipsets? I am not that familiar with Intel series boards - what do these ones have over the the more recent 8xx series chipsets? The board must have at least 5 PCI slots as I will be needing 4 of them straight away for building a DVR system using bt878 based adapters. The 915 and 945 are the boards recommended by the vendor of the adapters, however I am looking for something moderately priced and I am hoping that boards of this type are not too expensive. I'd also like to know what type of CPU chips go with them. There seem to be so many Intel CPU types and I find it all rather confusing. Are there any stock Dell machines with enough slots which will fit the bill? Even if they are server oriented that will be fine. / |

What motherboards are based on Intel 915 and Intel 945 chipsets
After doing some googling it looks like I have to rule out the 915/945
chipsets. They all appear to be based on PCI Express and the adapters I am using are all PCI. It looks like I have to go with the 865 and 875 chipsets. Which are the better ones out there? |

Have you considered going with AMD? There are S939 boards that have 5
PCI slots and support dual core Athlon64 X2s Which current motherboards are based on Intel 915 and Intel 945 chipsets? |

The PCI adapters in question are not considered to work well with AMD
boards. Pentium boards with Intel chipsets appear to be the preferred type in that area. |

Huh? They don't work well with *any* of the five (six ?) chipsets for AMD mbrds? They still get away with this crap... designing PCI cards which only work with Intel chipset mbrds? Maybe he's got five cards from Creative Labs. ;-) ...or more likely, a troll. -- Keith |

The boards in question are bt878 video capture cards used for multi
channel DVR capture. The vendors of the cards prefer Intel because in their experience they have fewer reported problems with them. Just because some people prefer, or even need to stick to products by the dominant players in the PC business doesn't make them trolls. Remember that no one ever got fired for going with IBM, Microsoft or Intel. Your apparent prejudices against the major industry players, probably on account of their business practices are of no consequence to 99% of computer users out there. If you know of any non-Intel Pentium chipsets or AMD chipsets which are known to work well with PV149 or Kodicom series DVR cards I'll be glad to know. PS. I'll be grateful if you don't take this thread off topic |
